Iowa Collaborative Safety Net Provider NetworkExpanding Our Capacity To Care

Specialty Care

A Specialty Care Advisory Group was established to develop a strategy to address increasing access to specialty care services for safety net patients.  This Advisory Group includes representatives from:

  • Free Clinics
  • Rural Health Clinics
  • Community Health Centers
  • University of Iowa College of Public Health
  • University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
  • Polk County Medical Society

Based on research conducted by the Network, it is clear there is no single, ideal model to address this complex problem in all communities. Given that there is no “one size fits all” solution, the Specialty Care Advisory Group determined the best approach is to fund a series of pilot projects to address this issue.  With funding appropriated by the Iowa Legislature, the Network will fund two pilot projects in 2007.  It is anticipated that the pilot projects will generate ideas and best practices for replication across the state.
